This page contains everything Hack Clubbers got up to over the 2020 Summer of Making. Scrapbook was originally built for the summer and whilst it’s now a permanent feature of the community, we’ve kept this page up as an archive.
@alialiwa20050Today, I've started experimenting with some configurations for my Raspberry Pi (mini DIY server) to find the most optimal solutions.
I was comparing RealVNC vs xRDP (which I've been using for a long time), and found that the VNC protocol is likely the better option compared to the Remote Desktop Protocol (now it's my favorite).
I've tested different categories, mainly which one was lighter.
On my Raspberry Pi 4B, VNC had less ram usage.
Now this may not seem a lot, especially on my Pi 4 with 8GB ram, but VNC may make more of a difference on Pi models with less ram, such as my 1GB Pi 3B.
Out of the box, RDP has better resolution, but with some configuration, I was able to get VNC to display 1080p resolution.
Also, something that I found as potentially useful was the fact that you can connect your Pi to a VPN, simply whitelist the VNC port, and you could connect and login remotely to the Pi via VNC while it is connected to a VPN (I wasn't able to do that with RDP).
Next, I'm planning on testing out OpenVPN versus the Wireguard protocol on my Pi, because I'm thinking of using my Pi as a DIY VPN server (and a way to have access to my home LAN outside of home, with minimal port forwarding), in the near future.
@matthewvandyke080Today I have officially reached 365 days of posting to my scrapbook. I started during Summer of Making last year just as something to do, but after the summer I kept up with it to keep myself accountable. If you go back you can see all my projects and updates from them that I have done since last year such as: Students Who Code, my portfolio, myDash, BrainDUMP, esports website, running Secret Santa, and so much more! Thank you to everyone who has followed along and thanks to @sampoder and @matthew for creating scrapbook! So now that 365 is done.....whats next?
@kevindai020I have to get up at 8:30 tomorrow and it's 2 am and I'm messing around with Falstad circuit simulator for fun :coolsad:
@austin0woot my lab kit and som stickers came in on the same day!! exciting :yay: 📦 Also got accepted for a teaching position td. What a day :))) yee I’m getting giddy j thinking about setting up my lesson plans for the upcoming semester :fastparrot:
@onursertgil230As always, YOU ARE AMAZING. Ive just received my stickers and it made me extremelly happy. Again, thanks for all your support and hardwork. Summer of making was one of the greatest summers ive ever had, thanks for making this dream a reality.
@ongzhizheng0since everyone's doing it 👀
i pretty much started coding after joining hackclub during SOM :som-7+:
hope i get to do more awesome stuff in 2021 :D
@sampoder0this me my github graph! in late jan, I joined hack club and in April started work on :summer-of-making:
@safin.singh0Rewrote my GPT parser thingy implementation! I got rid of a bunch of useless dependencies that I could manually implement and it now contains zero unsafe code! The table-generating code has been rewritten to be way simpler and requires less allocations and stuff. I've also included comments in a bunch of places in case y'all are curious what certain lines do. Code is on GitHub and you can install it (assuming you have cargo) with cargo install gptinfo!
@jubriloye20160I'm super late but, the first part of my hardware arrived. Thank you to the entire SOM team , especially you @sampoder and of course @roshan you guys are amazing :parrot::parrot:
@sampoder0missed out on getting a fancy domain for your scrapbook? wish you had more custom domains? well your in luck today!
i have create a quick and easy tool that creates a vercel project which acts as a proxy for your scrapbook profile allowing you to set a custom domain.
so how to do it?
1. head to hack.af/scrapbook-domain. follow the steps provided.
2. once you’ve deployed the project you will see a screen saying Congratulations!, wait a couple of seconds and you’ll be redirected to the domains page.
3. Add the domain you’d like using Vercel’s built in instructions
4. Hoorah! You’ve done it!
the setup for this wild midnight project is at: github.com/sampoder/scrapbook-redirect
go crazy with your domains!
@jasonaa1Just got a bunch of stuff for robotics! I'm gonna be testing some sensors and seeing how they work in Java, and and also trying out the new control hub which is pretty neat!
@phultquist0I’m (almost too) excited to ship Frame 🖼️, our SOM project we’ve completed.
🦑 What is it? Previously named Smart Album Cover Display, Frame, which sits on your wall, displays the music you’re listening to. It either uses the Spotify API or detects the music you’re listening to with microphones.
🐳 It’s been a good summer! With all the support from Hack Club we were able to complete this, and I am currently working on a Flutter App to configure settings (currently it’s a react site).
🐝 What’s the purpose? We see it as art. I truly spend hours each day just looking at it (the beauty is not apparent in the photos). Music truly is a beautiful thing.
🍀 Want to make your own? We’re working on a hardware guide. The code is, of course, open source. Contact us with questions.
We couldn’t have done this without Hack Club 🎉 💓
p.s. here is Blonde by Frank Ocean, KIDS SEE GHOSTS by KIDS SEE GHOSTS, Yellow Submarine by The Beatles and Nothing Was The Same by Drake. We’ve also implemented a clock when paused (with custom colors 🎨) and auto-brightness with a light sensor.
@jessding0today was so tiring. I passed two rounds of interviews, studied for midterms, did a bunch of other work and now I feel like a soggy run over French fry :^) at least everything went really well tho :)))))
